Kaylee Thomas escaped from Madrid, taking secrets with her that could get her killed. As an cyber operative for Grimaldi Global, Kaylee’s single-minded focus is on tracking down criminals who use the internet to hide their identity. A survivor of cyber bullying, she uses her skills to ensure that no one can hide on the internet.
Mick O’Halloran is a covert ops agent for Grimaldi Global and leader of the Ares team. Saving lives and protecting others is a way of life for him. But babysitting a computer geek sounds like a job better left for the boys back in the office until he meets Kaylee. Sparks fly between them as he takes her into protective custody until the facts she’s uncovered can be verified.
But some secrets can’t stay hidden and when an assassin comes calling Mick and Kaylee go on the hunt for the mole inside their group. It’ll take every bit of her computer savvy and his lethal skills to keep them alive. Releasing the information that Kaylee has uncovered threatens to burn the world down around them.
Dance With The Devil is book one in the Gods of War series by Katherine Garbera. We get a little suspense and romance.
This is my first experience reading Ms. Garbera. I have to say I did like Dance With The Devil, but it felt like it was lacking a little in the suspense and romance department.
I liked Kaylee, Mick, and the covert ops team that Mick runs. Though the characters weren’t overly impressive and all felt a little flat. I didn’t see any depth into them. No background history and very little is talked about their team or the camaraderie. I like to get to know my characters and I didn’t feel like I got that.
As for the romance well they had the lust, but I never felt the romance. Kaylee and Mick are thrown together and act on their attraction and the stress of the situations. They don’t have time to really get to know each other, to get the deep connection, and yet they both see past all the outer stuff and into the heart of one another. I wasn’t buying into their romance. Lust, yes… They had that. Their moments together where oh so steamy and filled with some tension.
As for the plot well I had an idea within the first chapter on who was betraying Kaylee’s team and the covert ops guys; before it was an indication and found out. The story was slow going, though the heat between the couple was their, but things didn’t get exciting until around the last 80% when Kaylee gets herself kidnapped. (Rolls Eyes) She already new that this team member was betraying them, yet she goes off with said person, alone…
Something else that bothered me was in the beginning after Mick and his team pick up Kaylee’s team. Mick clearly didn’t trust Kaylee or her team. He took their electronics away, but something happens and he lets them have it all back, so that they can do their computer thing even though he has a suspicion that someone on the computer geek team is betraying them. (My thought during this scene was the betrayer can make contact and tell the bad guys the plan.) So why do this when he clearly didn’t trust them???
All and all I wasn’t overly impressed. I enjoyed and had a delightful time reading, but I probably won’t be continuing with the series anytime soon. It wasn’t bad. It was just predicable to me and the characters didn’t make an impression.
Rated: 3 Stars
